EVERGREEN, CO – 14 Mar, 2017 – Richard Mancuso, along with his co-author, Jacquelyn Gutc, have released their new book, based on his father’s early life in New York City. The Good Don is the true story of Sal Mancuso, or “Honest Sal”, a 1930’s era Robin Hood, and his surprising story of life during the Great Depression.
Sal Mancuso, after many decades, surprised his son with the true story of his past life during the Great Depression in Manhattan’s Lower East Side – a time where millions of Americans lost their jobs, and instead turned to local neighborhood figures for support. “Honest Sal”, as he came to be known, dropped out of high school to support his family, and over the years, developed a shadowy business, that would make him the provider for dozens of families between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges in New York City.
His business savvy and pure determination to help others made him a local leader and prominent figure in the neighborhood, and the story of his rise to power, and eventual control of the turf between the two bridges of New York provides a unique glimpse into one of the most unique time period’s in American history.
“My father waited for many years to share his surprising past with me, and his true story is just amazing – it gives a unique portrait of life in New York during one of the hardest times in U.S. History,” stated author and son, Richard Mancuso. “Once I heard the whole story, I knew that it was too good not be shared with those who have an interest in American History, the City of New York, and the struggle of Italian Americans.”
