As technology becomes an evolving and growing part of the world, this also means big changes in the types of careers students look forward to for their futures. Many school districts, like Lakeside Union School District in East San Diego County, California, are aiming to find innovative ways to make STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) an integral part of their classrooms and campuses.

For their efforts in STEM activities, curriculum, and programs, Lakeside Union School District was selected by the State of California for excellence in Science standards leadership and early implementation. Lakeside School District also has one of only eight school districts in California selected as a “fast start” demonstration school to begin implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards several years ahead of the state implementation timeline.

Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) aims to improve science education, through state-based standards and three-dimensional learning, that stimulates students’ interests in science and prepares them for college, careers, and citizenship. Lakeside Union School District teachers have also lent their expertise to the development, feedback, and testing of Tools and Processes now utilized districtwide, countywide, statewide, and sometimes nationwide.

Thanks to the focus on early implementation of science standards, as well a huge push in other STEM programs and activities, Lakeside Union School District is giving their students an excellent start for a path in STEM careers.
