Columbia, MO – Business leader and philanthropist Greg DeLine likes to stay engaged with his employees, as well as with young entrepreneurs that seek his advice for start-up businesses.  

“I believe staying engaged leads to greater empowerment, productivity and results by the employee,” says Greg DeLine, who owns several businesses in the housing, financial and trucking industries and employs dozens of people in Columbia, Missouri, area and more than 500 nationally.

DeLine’s engagement and connections have led him outside of his own businesses and into a larger mentoring role with young entrepreneurs in the area.

“Anything I can do to help people capitalize on their maximum effort, I’m all for it,” says Greg DeLine. “It’s gratifying to watch people just ‘take off’ and see what they are capable of doing, based on a little advice and maybe a few specific recommendations.”

DeLine summarized his top five pieces of advice for young entrepreneurs:

1. It’s more than just hard work. You have to have a very specific idea of what you are going to do and how you’re going to be better than someone else. 

2. Stay in position. If an opportunity comes and you’re not in position, you’re going to miss it. You have to be ready for the opportunity. 

3. You need a combination of passion, hard work and access to capital. Capital always enters the equation, and it is the piece that businesspeople are less likely to be prepared for.

4. Demand transparency and honesty — not only of others but more importantly yourself. 

5. Once you figure out how to do something well within in your business, do it over and over again. This will be your best example of success.
