Costume Designing at the Lamb’s Players Theatre Connects Artistic and Realistic Students with an Exciting Future Career Option

November 06 11:35 2018

At the Lamb’s Players Theatre in San Diego, California, costume designer Jemima Dutra took World of Work on a tour of her world in the costume design shop. As a child, Jemima was always making sketches and drawings of her own designs. Her mother would take her to the fabric store for remnants so she could hand sew clothing for her dolls. “That’s what I do now!” Jemima tells World of Work, “Except for my dolls are real people and they get to be wearing costumes that we created on stage, every night, and get to be seen by hundreds of people each performance. It’s really exciting!”. The World of Work is exactly that; aligning individuals strengths and talents with future career opportunities. When properly aligned, work doesn’t seem like work, but rather a pursuit of a passion or hobby.

The World of Work utilizes the RIASEC framework to help identify areas of career interest. Thousands of jobs are coded within the RIASEC interest areas; Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. With these codes, it is easy to identify which careers will fit a person’s natural abilities. On the RIASEC scale, Jemima is an A for artistic and an R for realistic. Her career as a costume designer fits her RIASEC career interest areas perfectly, as A/R people often fit best in careers where they can be innovative, create, and design with their hands.  Jemima’s enthusiasm for her career is obvious in her Meet a Pro Chat segment she did with World of Work.
